George Eliot Hospital - History

History

The George Eliot Hospital opened in 1948. The Manor Hospital, located in the centre of Nuneaton, retained the town’s Accident and Emergency Department, operating theatres and orthopaedic wards until they were moved to the George Eliot Hospital in 1993. The Manor Hospital closed on July 20, 1993 and has since turned into a doctor's surgery.

In 1982, the Hospital set up its own museum. Originally intended as a teaching aid, the museum evolved into one of the few NHS-owned museums in the country until it cost-cutting measures forced it to close circa 2005. The George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust was formed in April 1994 from the previous George Eliot Hospital Acute Unit & Nuneaton Maternity Hospital. Queen Elizabeth II visited the Hospital in December that year as part of her first visit to Nuneaton and unveiled a bust of herself which can be seen in the main entrance. An educational centre known as ‘GETEC’ was completed and opened in late 2006.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The awareness that health is dependent upon habits that we control makes us the first generation in history that to a large extent determines its own destiny.
Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)

If you look at the 150 years of modern China’s history since the Opium Wars, then you can’t avoid the conclusion that the last 15 years are the best 15 years in China’s modern history.
    J. Stapleton Roy (b. 1935)

Whenever we read the obscene stories, the voluptuous debaucheries, the cruel and torturous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness, with which more than half the Bible is filled, it would be more consistent that we called it the word of a demon than the Word of God. It is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind.
    Thomas Paine (1737–1809)
