Wartime

When World War Two broke out in September 1939, Devine did not initially expect to be called up, owing to a supposedly weak heart. He did, however, pass his army medical and went into basic training with the Royal Artillery at the end of 1941. After a period of relative inactivity in India, he was transferred to Burma where he spent the final part of the war engaged in jungle warfare.
