Geography of Orissa - Cities

Cities

The capital of Odisha is Bhubaneswar. It is famed for its magnificent temples, numbering around a thousand. Cuttack,which is the former capital of Odisha is 29 km from Bhubaneswar. With the rapid expansion of two cities and better road connectivity, the two cities are now almost conjoined and considered as twin cities. The city of Puri is nearby, at a distance of around 60 kilometers on the coast of the Bay of Bengal. Puri is a holy city and the site of the annual festival of the deity Jagannath. It is one of the four Dhams (holy places) of Hinduism. The world-famous "car festival" (rath yatra) is celebrated in Puri.

Famous quotes containing the word cities:

    ... in the cities there are thousands of rolling stones like me. We are all alike; we have no ties, we know nobody, we own nothing. When one of us dies, they scarcely know where to bury him.... We have no house, no place, no people of our own. We live in the streets, in the parks, in the theatres. We sit in restaurants and concert halls and look about at the hundreds of our own kind and shudder.
    Willa Cather (1873–1947)

    An architect should live as little in cities as a painter. Send him to our hills, and let him study there what nature understands by a buttress, and what by a dome.
    John Ruskin (1819–1900)

    London, thou art of townes A per se.
    Soveraign of cities, semeliest in sight,
    Of high renoun, riches, and royaltie;
    Of lordis, barons, and many goodly knyght;
    Of most delectable lusty ladies bright;
    Of famous prelatis in habitis clericall;
    Of merchauntis full of substaunce and myght:
    London, thou art the flour of Cities all
    William Dunbar (c. 1465–c. 1530)
