Castings Division Plant Remains
As of October 2009, most of the buildings at the former General Steel plant, including the old Commonwealth foundry at 1417 State Street, Granite City, Illinois have been demolished. Famous quotes containing the words division, plant and/or remains:
“God and the Devil are an effort after specialization and the division of labor.”
—Samuel Butler (18351902)
“What do we plant when we plant the tree?
We plant the ship that will cross the sea,
We plant the mast to carry the sails,
We plant the planks to withstand the gales
The keel, the keelson, and beam and knee
We plant the ship when we plant the tree.”
—Henry Abbey (18421911)
“To be a Negro is to participate in a culture of poverty and fear that goes far deeper than any law for or against discrimination.... After the racist statutes are all struck down, after legal equality has been achieved in the schools and in the courts, there remains the profound institutionalized and abiding wrong that white America has worked on the Negro for so long.”
—Michael Harrington (19281989)
