General Church of The New Jerusalem - History

History

In 1890, as a result of a disagreement over the divine authority of Swedenborg's writings, the General Church broke away from the General Convention of the Church of the New Jerusalem, also known as the Swedenborgian Church of North America, which had itself been established in 1817. In 1999, the General Church had about 5,600 members, and the General Convention had about 2,600 members. By 2006, membership in the General Church had increased to 6,760.
