Politics
The riding had long been safe for the Liberals save for a lone Progressive Conservative victory in their 1984 nationwide landslide. However, in the 2006 election the Bloc Québécois won the seat. The Bloc managed to hold the seat with just over 29% of the vote in 2008, by far the lowest percentage for a winning candidate nationwide, due to a near-three-way split between themselves, the New Democratic Party and the Liberals. The riding then went to the NDP in the 2011 election.

Famous quotes containing the word politics:
“Our democracy, our culture, our whole way of life is a spectacular triumph of the blah. Why not have a political convention without politics to nominate a leader whos out in front of nobody?... Maybe our national mindlessness is the very thing that keeps us from turning into one of those smelly European countries full of pseudo-reds and crypto-fascists and greens who dress like forest elves.”
—P.J. (Patrick Jake)
“His talk was like a spring, which runs
With rapid change from rocks to roses:
It slipped from politics to puns,
It passed from Mahomet to Moses;
Beginning with the laws which keep
The planets in their radiant courses,
And ending with some precept deep
For dressing eels, or shoeing horses.”
—Winthrop Mackworth Praed (18021839)
“When feminism does not explicitly oppose racism, and when antiracism does not incorporate opposition to patriarchy, race and gender politics often end up being antagonistic to each other and both interests lose.”
—Kimberly Crenshaw (b. 1959)
