Gary Speed - Early Life and Career

Early Life and Career

Speed was born in Mancot, Wales, although his parents Roger and Carol, sister Lesley and sons Thomas and Edward were all born in Chester on the English side of the border. He attended Hawarden High School, which Michael Owen would later attend.

He supported Everton as a youngster, and lived on the same street as the club's former captain Kevin Ratcliffe who played kickabouts with Speed and his friends on occasion. Whilst at school he was employed as a paperboy and played for Flintshire Schoolboys, a local boys team, and for Aston Park Rangers. As a youngster Speed excelled at cricket as well as football.

Famous quotes containing the words early, life and/or career:

To be candid, in Middlemarch phraseology, meant, to use an early opportunity of letting your friends know that you did not take a cheerful view of their capacity, their conduct, or their position; and a robust candour never waited to be asked for its opinion.
George Eliot [Mary Ann (or Marian)

There is no way to penetrate the surface of life but by attacking it earnestly at a particular point.
    Charles Horton Cooley (1864–1929)

I began my editorial career with the presidency of Mr. Adams, and my principal object was to render his administration all the assistance in my power. I flattered myself with the hope of accompanying him through [his] voyage, and of partaking in a trifling degree, of the glory of the enterprise; but he suddenly tacked about, and I could follow him no longer. I therefore waited for the first opportunity to haul down my sails.
    William Cobbett (1762–1835)
