Gang Activity and Purpose
Most gangs in the United States are formed with some type of intention. Gangs such as Latin Kings and the Bloods say they represent "brotherhood" and unity. Police say 80% of crimes throughout the country are committed by gang members. Although most gangs started in major cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami and New York City, they migrated to other U.S. cities such as Atlanta, Memphis, Orlando, Houston and Detroit after becoming more sophisticated and powerful.

Famous quotes containing the words gang, activity and/or purpose:
“What lies behind facts like these: that so recently one could not have said Scott was not perfect without earning at least sorrowful disapproval; that a year after the Gang of Four were perfect, they were villains; that in the fifties in the United States a nothing-man called McCarthy was able to intimidate and terrorise sane and sensible people, but that in the sixties young people summoned before similar committees simply laughed.”
—Doris Lessing (b. 1919)
“The mob is man voluntarily descending to the nature of the beast. Its fit hour of activity is night. Its actions are insane like its whole constitution. It persecutes a principle; it would whip a right; it would tar and feather justice, by inflicting fire and outrage upon the houses and persons of those who have these. It resembles the prank of boys, who run with fire-engines to put out the ruddy aurora streaming to the stars.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“No further evidence is needed to show that mental illness is not the name of a biological condition whose nature awaits to be elucidated, but is the name of a concept whose purpose is to obscure the obvious.”
—Thomas Szasz (b. 1920)
