Gan Ning is featured as a playable character in Koei's Dynasty Warriors and Warriors Orochi video game series.
Gan Xing (甘興), a character played by Nakamura Shidō in the 2008 film Red Cliff, is said to be based on Gan Ning. In the film, Gan Xing was severely wounded by enemy arrows during the allied army's attack on Cao Cao's land fortress. He packed himself with explosives and hurled them towards the gate, destroying it for friendly forces to penetrate the enemy's defenses. However he was killed in the blast.
