Gairdner Foundation International Award

The Gairdner Foundation International Award is given annually at a special dinner to three to six people for outstanding discoveries or contributions to medical science. Receipt of the Gairdner is traditionally considered a precursor to winning the Nobel Prize in Medicine; as of 2007, 69 Nobel Prizes have been awarded to prior Gairdner recipients. Gairdner Foundation Awards are given annually in the amount of $100,000 (each) payable in Canadian funds. They are awarded to residents of any country in the world, whatsoever. A joint award may be given for the same discovery or contribution to medical science, but in that case each awardee receives a full prize.

Famous quotes containing the words foundation and/or award:

Surrealism is not a school of poetry but a movement of liberation.... A way of rediscovering the language of innocence, a renewal of the primordial pact, poetry is the basic text, the foundation of the human order. Surrealism is revolutionary because it is a return to the beginning of all beginnings.
    Octavio Paz (b. 1914)

The award of a pure gold medal for poetry would flatter the recipient unduly: no poem ever attains such carat purity.
    Robert Graves (1895–1985)
