Gainesville High School competes under the name the Red Elephants. They are the only school in the country with that mascot. They received that name in the 1920s when the announcer announced the football team was coming on the field looking like a herd of "Red Elephants". (This was well before the more publicly known unofficial nickname of The University of Alabama Crimson Tide.). Red Elephants boys and girls golf teams also won state in 2012.
