Furness Line

The Furness Line, in North West England, runs from Barrow-in-Furness to Ulverston and Grange-over-Sands, connecting with the West Coast Main Line at Carnforth. Along with the Cumbrian Coast Line, which runs north from Barrow to Whitehaven, Workington and Carlisle, it is considered one of the most scenic routes in England.

Towns and villages along the routes are listed below.

  • Barrow-in-Furness
  • Roose
  • Dalton-in-Furness
  • Ulverston
    • The now-closed branch line to Lakeside used to diverge here. Part of this route is preserved as the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway.
  • Cark and Cartmel
  • Kents Bank
  • Grange-over-Sands
  • Arnside
  • Silverdale
  • Carnforth
  • Lancaster

Train services are primarily operated by TransPennine Express between Barrow-in-Furness and Lancaster or Manchester. From Lancaster the trains use the West Coast Main Line and then follow the Manchester-Preston Line from Preston. In addition, local services are operated by Northern Rail between Lancaster and Barrow, with some continuing to Sellafield or Carlisle via the Cumbrian Coast Line.

Famous quotes containing the word line:

Any walk through a park that runs between a double line of mangy trees and passes brazenly by the ladies’ toilet is invariably known as “Lover’s Lane.”
    F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940)
