Furnace Room

A furnace room is a room in a building for locating a furnace and auxiliary equipment. Such a room minimizes the visual impact of the furnace, pipes and other gear. A modern compact furnace for a single family home can readily fit into a small closet. However, care must be exercised to provide adequate ventilation as the exterior of the furnace unit emits a significant amount of heat. An unheated attached garage can be an ideal furnace room, as the exterior heat from the furnace will warm and dry the garage. However, care must be taken to prevent air leakage from the garage into the house via pathways, either through or around the furnace and ductwork. Such air leakage could act to transport potentially dangerous contaminants from the garage into the main body of the house. In the picture, the airflow is from bottom to top, with an electronic air filter on the bottom, followed by a natural gas high efficiency or condensing furnace (98% efficient) in the middle, and air conditioning coils on top.

Famous quotes containing the words furnace and/or room:

    ‘Alas!’ quoth he, ‘but newly born in fiery heats I fry,
    Yet none approach to warm their hearts or feel my fire but I.
    My faultless breast the furnace is, the fuel wounding thorns;
    Love is the fire, and sighs the smoke, the ashes shame and scorns;
    The fuel justice layeth on, and mercy blows the coals;
    The metal in this furnace wrought are men’s defiled souls;
    Robert Southwell (1561?–1595)

    When our kids are young, many of us rush out to buy a cute little baby book to record the meaningful events of our young child’s life...But I’ve often thought there should be a second book, one with room to record the moral milestones of our child’s lives. There might be space to record dates she first shared or showed compassion or befriended a new student or thought of sending Grandma a get-well card or told the truth despite its cost.
