Frensham Heights School - Sport

Sport

Despite being a somewhat small school, Frensham Heights hosts several sports teams in various fields of sport and played at all age ranges. These include common sports such as Rugby, football, hockey, basketball, netball and cricket. Taking part in sport each week is compulsory until year 13 when students can opt to use the time usually allocated to sport for extra revision and study, although this is only allowed if a student attends a sport ECA. Although not being renown for its sport, the under 16 boy's football team has reached the quarter final of the ISFA cup, a national trophy for small independent schools, in the last two years running with Nathan Barnett, Gene Barnett, Tom Davies, Michael Floyd and Jolyon Layard-Horsfall being ever present in the side. Davies and Floyd's partnership in defense was key to the success of the team, with Floyd's heading and attacking flair being complimented by Davies' passing range and ferocious tackling. The Barnett twins in midfield, with Gene's goal threat and Nathan's strength and fitness to go along with fantastic technique, gave the team a strong, dynamic partnership in the middle of the pitch. Layard-Horsfall's pace and finishing ability made him the teams main goal-scoring threat. The first XI will have a strong team in the next two years as both Barnett's, Floyd and Layard-Horsfall will be staying on for sixth form, though Davies will be leaving at the end of year 11.

Between year 7 and year 11, there are two sessions of sport each week, while only one for the sixth form. From year 11 upwards, students can choose which sport to do each term with options being basketball, football, table tennis, hockey and golf, as well as swimming, tennis and rounders during the summer. Prior to year 11, students partake in sports including rugby, basketball, hockey and football and athletics, rounders and swimming in the summer term but have no choice in which the activity occurs.

Famous quotes containing the word sport:

“Justice” was done, and the President of the Immortals, in Æschylean phrase, had ended his sport with Tess. And the d’Urberville knights and dames slept on in their tombs unknowing. The two speechless gazers bent themselves down to the earth, as if in prayer, and remained thus a long time, absolutely motionless: the flag continued to wave silently. As soon as they had strength they arose, joined hands again, and went on.
    The End
    Thomas Hardy (1840–1928)

Sweet Auburn, loveliest village of the plain,
Where health and plenty cheered the labouring swain,
Where smiling spring its earliest visit paid,
And parting summer’s lingering blooms delayed,
Dear lovely bowers of innocence and ease,
Seats of my youth, when every sport could please,
How often have I loitered o’er the green,
Where humble happiness endeared each scene.
    Oliver Goldsmith (1730?–1774)
