Cultural Identity
People identifying themselves as Free-radicals are united by a sense of non-conformity to other sub-cultures. Although they may identify with certain elements from other groups, such as music, clothing and films, “Free-radicals” do not choose to identify with the fundamental underlying patterns of other groups, thereby making a distinction between Free-radicals and other sub-cultures. Although the Free-radical sub-culture borrows” much from other subcultures, it remains fundamentally different since members prefer to “make things up as they go”, rather than follow any defined trends. This means that people within the Free-radical group are completely unique with regard to their preference of clothing and music, for example.

Famous quotes containing the words cultural and/or identity:
“A culture may be conceived as a network of beliefs and purposes in which any string in the net pulls and is pulled by the others, thus perpetually changing the configuration of the whole. If the cultural element called morals takes on a new shape, we must ask what other strings have pulled it out of line. It cannot be one solitary string, nor even the strings nearby, for the network is three-dimensional at least.”
—Jacques Barzun (b. 1907)
“An identity would seem to be arrived at by the way in which the person faces and uses his experience.”
—James Baldwin (19241987)
