Frederick Douglass Academy - History

History

Frederick Douglass Academy was created in 1991 by "Ms. Patricia Black, Manhattan Superintendent of High Schools, Dr. Bertram Brown, Community School District 5 Superintendent and Dr. Lorraine Monroe (former Deputy Chancellor of Instruction)." It was created as a need to enforce better education in the inner-city area. More importantly, its mission is to have all its students graduate and matriculate. Dr. Gregory Hodge was FDA principal for over an decade, which inspired a series of other FDA's to be developed (seven in total). It should be noted that recently, Dr. Hodge retired after it as was announced that the school received a " D " rating in a recent progress report ( 2009-2010/ NYCDOE progress report). The future of FDA leadership has now fell into the hands of Joseph Gates.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

In nature, all is useful, all is beautiful. It is therefore beautiful, because it is alive, moving, reproductive; it is therefore useful, because it is symmetrical and fair. Beauty will not come at the call of a legislature, nor will it repeat in England or America its history in Greece. It will come, as always, unannounced, and spring up between the feet of brave and earnest men.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

[Men say:] “Don’t you know that we are your natural protectors?” But what is a woman afraid of on a lonely road after dark? The bears and wolves are all gone; there is nothing to be afraid of now but our natural protectors.
Frances A. Griffin, U.S. suffragist. As quoted in History of Woman Suffrage, vol. 4, ch. 19, by Susan B. Anthony and Ida Husted Harper (1902)

Classes struggle, some classes triumph, others are eliminated. Such is history; such is the history of civilization for thousands of years.
    Mao Zedong (1893–1976)
