Franklin Steele - Purchase of Fort Snelling

Purchase of Fort Snelling

By 1858, Franklin Steele bought the fort and 8,000 acres (32 km2) surrounding for $90,000, as the government no longer needed a frontier outpost at that location. But during the Civil War, he leased it back to the government for use as an induction station. After the war was over Steele leased the land to settlers and the city began to grow. The town of Minneapolis became a city in 1867. He ultimately became prosperous from lumber, the suspension bridge, and land deals.

‘Tis said of love that it sometimes goes, sometimes flies; runs with one, walks gravely with another; turns a third into ice, and sets a fourth in a flame: it wounds one, another it kills: like lightning it begins and ends in the same moment: it makes that fort yield at night which it besieged but in the morning; for there is no force able to resist it.
    Miguel De Cervantes (1547–1616)
