2011 Speaker Election
On October 25, 2011 the Toronto Star revealed that Klees had turned down an appointment to Tim Hudak's shadow cabinet because he planned to run for Speaker of the Ontario Legislature. The minority Liberal government was one seat short of forming a majority and if Klees had been elected Speaker, he would have given the government a working majority as the speaker usually votes with the government in motions of non-confidence. The move was met with derision from other Conservatives with one MPP telling the Toronto Star: “This is the equivalent of crossing the floor... The Liberals better support him, because Frank doesn’t have a lot friends in our caucus today.” Klees withdrew his candidacy on October 29, 2011 due to lack of support.

Famous quotes containing the words speaker and/or election:
“English audiences of working people are like an instrument that responds to the player. Thought ripples up and down them, and if in some heart the speaker strikes a dissonance there is a swift answer. Always the voice speaks from gallery or pit, the terrible voice which detaches itself in every English crowd, full of caustic wit, full of irony or, maybe, approval.”
—Mary Heaton Vorse (18741966)
“In every election in American history both parties have their clichés. The party that has the clichés that ring true wins.”
—Newt Gingrich (b. 1943)
