Spanish Armada
War broke out between Spain and England in 1585. Drake sailed to the New World and sacked the ports of Santo Domingo and Cartagena in present-day Colombia. On June 6, 1586, during the return leg of the voyage, he raided the Spanish fort of San AugustÃn in Spanish Florida. These acts encouraged Philip II of Spain to order planning for an invasion of England.

Famous quotes containing the word spanish:
“The Bermudas are said to have been discovered by a Spanish ship of that name which was wrecked on them.... Yet at the very first planting of them with some sixty persons, in 1612, the first governor, the same year, built and laid the foundation of eight or nine forts. To be ready, one would say, to entertain the first ships company that should be next shipwrecked on to them.”
