Fourth and Long Gone

Fourth and Long Gone is a 1985 novel written by college football coaching legend Pepper Rodgers. Although fictional, it is a roman à clef based on true stories. Unlike more serious exposé-style sports fiction written by authors such as former Dallas Cowboys receiver Peter Gent, who authored the gritty North Dallas Forty and the darker The Franchise, Fourth and Long Gone is more light-hearted and bawdy.

Famous quotes containing the words fourth and/or long:

... men and women are not yet free.... The slavery of greed endures. Little child workers, the hope of the future, are sacrificed to industry. Young men are sent out by the billion to die for profits.... We must destroy industrial slavery and build industrial democracy.... The people everywhere must come into possession of the earth [second, third, and fourth ellipses in source].
    Sara Bard Field (1882–1974)

I feel no more like a man now than I did in long skirts, unless it be that enjoying more freedom and cutting off the fetters is to be like a man. I suppose in that respect we are more mannish, for we know that in dress, as in all things else, we have been and are slaves, while man in dress and all things else is free.
    Amelia Bloomer (1818–1894)
