Fossil-fuel Phase-out

Fossil-fuel Phase-out

Fossil fuel phase-out is the planned transition beyond fossil fuels through transport electrification, decommissioning of operating fossil fuel-fired power plants and prevention of the construction of new fossil-fuel-fired power stations. Its purpose is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions which according to the scientific consensus are the major cause of current climate change. The energy vectors concerned are petroleum (oil), natural gas (gas), coal, and unconventional fossil fuels such as methane hydrates and tar sands.
