Fort Washita - Location

Location

France was the first European power to claim the region Fort Washita lies within. La Salle explored the Mississippi River in 1682 and claimed all the lands it drained for France. After the Seven Years' War France ceded the area to Spain. France regained the area with the Treaty of San Ildefonso in 1800. The United States purchased the area from France in 1803 with the Louisiana Purchase. The Adams–Onís Treaty of 1819 fixed a portion of the border between the United States and New Spain as the Red River.
