Fort Henry (West Virginia) - Form

Form

The fort enclosed about 0.5 acres (2,000 m2) and was defended on three sides by the topography. On the south and west (river) sides, the bluff prevented or greatly hindered assaults. On the north, the ravine provided protection. The only level ingress would have been from the east. Zane's blockhouse protected the entrance since attackers had to pass by it to attack the fort. They would have been caught in a crossfire between the fort and the blockhouse. All of the recorded attacks on Fort Henry came from the east.

The outer palisade wall was made of timbers, with blockhouses built at each of the four corners. In 1781 a two-story log structure was added near the front gate on which a cannon was mounted.

Famous quotes containing the word form:

The dignity of art probably appears most eminently with music since it does not have any material that needs to be discounted. Music is all form and content and elevates and ennobles everything that it expresses.
    Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe (1749–1832)

The detective novel is the art-for-art’s-sake of our yawning Philistinism, the classic example of a specialized form of art removed from contact with the life it pretends to build on.
    —V.S. (Victor Sawdon)

His form is fixed in my eyes,
    his touch in my limbs,
    his whispers in my ear,
and his heart is kept in my heart.
So what can Fate tear in two?
    Hla Stavhana (c. 50 A.D.)
