Forrest Highway - History

History

Historically, there have been two road routes and a rail link between Perth and the South West region of Western Australia. South Western Highway serviced the farming and logging areas west of the Darling Scarp such as Pinjarra and Harvey while Old Coast Road services the coastal fishing communities south of and including Mandurah. However, with increased population growth in both the Peel and South West regions, both routes became clogged with traffic during holiday periods and so a new road was needed both to shorten travel times and alleviate traffic problems in Mandurah, Pinjarra and Waroona.

Before construction, Kwinana Freeway terminated at Safety Bay Road in Baldivis after an extension in 2002, while Old Coast Road was a two-lane single carriageway between Bouvard and Lake Clifton before becoming a four-lane dual carriageway south of Grove Road.

The first sod was turned on the project in 2006 and the route was opened three months ahead of schedule on 20 September 2009 along with the extension of the Kwinana Freeway.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Indeed, the Englishman’s history of New England commences only when it ceases to be New France.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

History is not what you thought. It is what you can remember. All other history defeats itself.
In Beverly Hills ... they don’t throw their garbage away. They make it into television shows.
Idealism is the despot of thought, just as politics is the despot of will.
    Mikhail Bakunin (1814–1876)

It would be naive to think that peace and justice can be achieved easily. No set of rules or study of history will automatically resolve the problems.... However, with faith and perseverance,... complex problems in the past have been resolved in our search for justice and peace. They can be resolved in the future, provided, of course, that we can think of five new ways to measure the height of a tall building by using a barometer.
Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)
