Modern historians still debate on the exact relationship the Chinese Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) had with Tibet. Chinese sources assert that the Ming Dynasty had full sovereignty over Tibet, while scholars outside China assert that Tibet was simply an independent tributary and that the Ming merely had nominal suzerainty over Tibet by granting some lamas honorific titles.
