Ford's Grand Opera House

Ford's Grand Opera House was a major music venue in Baltimore, Maryland, located between Lexington and Marion Steets, just east of Eutaw Street. It was founded by theatre manager John T. Ford (also the owner of Ford's Theatre) and designed by architect James J. Gifford. The opera house opened to the public on October 2, 1871 with a show that included readings from Shakespeare's As You Like It as well as vocal and orchestral performances.

The opera house was later the site of Horace Greely's nomination as the Liberal Republican Party candidate for the 1872 U.S. presidential election.

Famous quotes containing the words ford, grand, opera and/or house:

It’s my feeling that God lends you your children until they’re about eighteen years old. If you haven’t made your points with them by then, it’s too late.
    —Betty Ford (b. 1918)

What is grand is necessarily obscure to weak men. That which can be made explicit to the idiot is not worth my care.
    William Blake (1757–1827)

I wish the opera was every night. It is, of all entertainments, the sweetest and most delightful. Some of the songs seemed to melt my very soul.
    Frances Burney (1752–1840)

If you feed a man, and wash his clothes, and borne his children, you and that man are married, that man is yours. If you sweep a house, and tend its fires and fill its stoves, and there is love in you all the years you are doing this, then you and that house are married, that house is yours.
    Truman Capote (20th century)
