From 1892 until 1992, the Football League Second Division was the second highest division overall in English football.
This ended with the creation of the FA Premier League, prior to the start of the 1992–93 season, which caused an administrative split between The Football League and the teams making up the new Premiership, which had previously been Football League Division One.
From 1992–93 to the 2003–04 season, it was the second highest division of The Football League, but the third highest division in the overall English football league system.
Complicating matters still further, The Second Division was re-branded as Football League One for commercial reasons prior to the start of the 2004–05 season. However, it remains the third highest division overall in English football.

Famous quotes containing the words football, league and/or division:
“Idont enjoy getting knocked about on a football field for other peoples amusement. I enjoy it if Im being paid a lot for it.”
—David Storey (b. 1933)
“I am not impressed by the Ivy League establishments. Of course they graduate the bestits all theyll take, leaving to others the problem of educating the country. They will give you an education the way the banks will give you moneyprovided you can prove to their satisfaction that you dont need it.”
—Peter De Vries (b. 1910)
“Slow, slow, fresh fount, keep time with my salt tears;
Yet slower yet, oh faintly gentle springs:
List to the heavy part the music bears,
Woe weeps out her division when she sings.
Droop herbs and flowers;
Fall grief in showers;
Our beauties are not ours:
Oh, I could still,
Like melting snow upon some craggy hill,
Drop, drop, drop, drop,
Since natures pride is, now, a withered daffodil.”
—Ben Jonson (15721637)
