Florida Gulf Coast University - Distinguished Speaker Series

Distinguished Speaker Series

FGCU has a distinguished speaker series where one major, high-profile speaker comes and speaks to the students every year. Former Secretary of State and retired General Colin Powell spoke to a crowd of 4,000 at FGCU's Alico Arena on March 23, 2007, as a part of the University Lecture Series. Maya Angelou also spoke to a crowd of about 4,000 FGCU students. Mikhail Gorbachev spoke to a sold-out crowd of FGCU students as well. Current U.S. Vice President Joe Biden has held an event here, as well as former VP Dick Cheney. Between 2008 and 2010, the lecture series was put on hold, but returned in April 2011, with former first lady Laura Bush as the guest speaker.

Famous quotes containing the words speaker and/or series:

English audiences of working people are like an instrument that responds to the player. Thought ripples up and down them, and if in some heart the speaker strikes a dissonance there is a swift answer. Always the voice speaks from gallery or pit, the terrible voice which detaches itself in every English crowd, full of caustic wit, full of irony or, maybe, approval.
    Mary Heaton Vorse (1874–1966)

I thought I never wanted to be a father. A child seemed to be a series of limitations and responsibilities that offered no reward. But when I experienced the perfection of fatherhood, the rest of the world remade itself before my eyes.
    Kent Nerburn (20th century)
