Florida Board of Regents - Composition

Composition

The Board of Regents had a total of 14 members, 13 of which were appointed by the Governor, and one who was the Commissioner of Education. One of the members appointed by the Governor had to be a full-time student of the state university system; historically, Florida Governors gave great weight to the recommendation of the Florida Student Association in filling that seat. The Governor's appointments had to be approved the Cabinet and the Senate. The Commissioner of Education and the full-time student served for one year. while all other members served for six years. Excluding the full-time student member and the Commissioner of Education, no county could house two Regents except for counties with over 900,000 residents.

The Regents were not paid; however, they were reimbursed for expenses incurred as a result of fulfilling their role, such as travel expenses.

The Board appointed a Chancellor to serve as its chief administrative officer.

Famous quotes containing the word composition:

At painful times, when composition is impossible and reading is not enough, grammars and dictionaries are excellent for distraction.
    Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806–1861)

Since body and soul are radically different from one another and belong to different worlds, the destruction of the body cannot mean the destruction of the soul, any more than a musical composition can be destroyed when the instrument is destroyed.
—Oscar Cullman. Immortality of the Soul or Resurrection of the Dead? The Witness of the New Testament, ch. 1, Epworth Press (1958)

Modern Western thought will pass into history and be incorporated in it, will have its influence and its place, just as our body will pass into the composition of grass, of sheep, of cutlets, and of men. We do not like that kind of immortality, but what is to be done about it?
    Alexander Herzen (1812–1870)
