Flavia Pennetta was born on 25 February 1982 in Brindisi, to Oronzo and Concetta Pennetta. She has an older sister, Giorgia. She was introduced to tennis at age five, and has cited Monica Seles as her tennis idol. Pennetta previously dated Carlos Moyá. The two split in 2007.
