The Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra is a regional symphony orchestra in Flagstaff, Arizona. They play in the Ardrey Auditorium on the campus of Northern Arizona University.
The orchestra was founded on April 11, 1899, as the "Flagstaff Symphony" made its concert debut in Babbitt's Opera House, located in what today is the second floor of the Babbitt Building in downtown Flagstaff. The modern Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra was founded as the Northern Arizona Symphony in 1950 by Dr. Eldon Ardrey.
Famous quotes containing the words symphony and/or orchestra:
“The truth is, as every one knows, that the great artists of the world are never Puritans, and seldom even ordinarily respectable. No virtuous manthat is, virtuous in the Y.M.C.A. sensehas ever painted a picture worth looking at, or written a symphony worth hearing, or a book worth reading, and it is highly improbable that the thing has ever been done by a virtuous woman.”
—H.L. (Henry Lewis)
“As the artist
extends his world with
one gratuitous flourisha stroke of white or
a run on the clarinet above the
bass tones of the orchestra ...”
—Denise Levertov (b. 1923)
