Flag of The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland

The Flag of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland was a modified British Blue Ensign. Centered in the fly of the flag was a depiction of the shield from the Federation's Coat of Arms. The rising sun is taken from the Arms of Nyasaland (now Malawi), the lion rampant is taken from the Arms of Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), and the black and white wavy lines is taken from the Arms of Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). In this form, it shows the Federation of all three British Colonies which lasted from 1953 to December 31, 1963. This flag flew alongside the Union Jack for the duration of the existence of the Federation.

Famous quotes containing the words flag and/or federation:

There’s an enduring American compulsion to be on the side of the angels. Expediency alone has never been an adequate American reason for doing anything. When actions are judged, they go before the bar of God, where Mom and the Flag closely flank His presence.
    Jonathan Raban (b. 1942)

Women realize that we are living in an ungoverned world. At heart we are all pacifists. We should love to talk it over with the war-makers, but they would not understand. Words are so inadequate, and we realize that the hatred must kill itself; so we give our men gladly, unselfishly, proudly, patriotically, since the world chooses to settle its disputes in the old barbarous way.
