The flag of Somalia is similar in layout to a few other flags in terms of its combination of a single five-pointed star superimposed on a plain-colored background. However, it is not a derivative of, and was conceived independently and holds a different meaning from, these other designs.
The comparable flag of Vietnam features a yellow star set against a red backdrop. Similarly, the flag of the former Congo Free State and its successor the Belgian Congo have a yellow star affixed onto a dark blue field. The Bonnie Blue Flag of West Florida is perhaps the closest in design, as it also features a white star superimposed on a blue background; however, the star here is slightly larger and the blue field is navy in hue.

Famous quotes containing the words similar and/or designs:
“Our ancestors were savages. The story of Romulus and Remus being suckled by a wolf is not a meaningless fable. The founders of every state which has risen to eminence have drawn their nourishment and vigor from a similar wild source. It was because the children of the Empire were not suckled by the wolf that they were conquered and displaced by the children of the northern forests who were.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“He began therefore to invest the fortress of my heart by a circumvallation of distant bows and respectful looks; he then entrenched his forces in the deep caution of never uttering an unguarded word or syllable. His designs being yet covered, he played off from several quarters a large battery of compliments. But here he found a repulse from the enemy by an absolute rejection of such fulsome praise, and this forced him back again close into his former trenches.”
—Sarah Fielding (17101768)
