Games

Main article: Video game See also: art games

There is a debate in the games industry, academia and video game culture regarding the stature of games as a fine art. Film critic Roger Ebert once has argued that games can never be art, as he claimed they lack the authorial control seen in film, and leave too much up to choice. However, he later stated that he was too unfamiliar with video games to judge them, although he still wasn't convinced at the time that video games are art. Nevertleless, as of 2012, he is open to the possibility that video games are art.

Famous quotes containing the word games:

Criticism occupies the lowest place in the literary hierarchy: as regards form, almost always; and as regards moral value, incontestably. It comes after rhyming games and acrostics, which at least require a certain inventiveness.
    Gustave Flaubert (1821–1880)

In the past, it seemed to make sense for a sportswriter on sabbatical from the playpen to attend the quadrennial hawgkilling when Presidential candidates are chosen, to observe and report upon politicians at play. After all, national conventions are games of a sort, and sports offers few spectacles richer in low comedy.
    Walter Wellesley (Red)

Whatever games are played with us, we must play no games with ourselves, but deal in our privacy with the last honesty and truth.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
