Fernando de Queiroz Scherer (born October 6, 1974 in Florianópolis) is an international top swimmer from Brazil, who won the bronze medal in the 50 meters freestyle at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, USA. He also won another bronze medal four years later in Sydney with the Brazilian relay team in the 4x100 meters freestyle.
His first major career title occurred at the inaugural 1993 FINA Short Course World Championships in Palma de Mallorca, where he won the 100 meters freestyle. Scherer is nicknamed Xuxa in his native country, and he became Brazil's Sportsman of The Year in 1995, after winning one golden and one silver medal at the 1995 FINA Short Course World Championships in Rio de Janeiro.
Scherer trained at The Race Club, a swimming club founded by Olympic Swimmers Gary Hall, Jr. and his father, Gary Hall, Sr. The Race Club, originally known as "The World Team," was designed to serve as a training group for elite swimmers across the world in preparation for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. To be able to train with the Race Club, one must either have been ranked in the top 20 in the world the past 3 calendar years or top 3 in their nation in the past year. The Race Club included such well known swimmers as Roland Mark Schoeman, Mark Foster, Ryk Neethling, Ricky Busquet and Therese Alshammar.
Scherer was involved in the organization Cansei. In 2009, Fernando Scherer took part in the second season of the Record reality show A Fazenda. Among the contestants of this TV show, he met his future wife, the actress and dancer Sheila Mello. Scherer and Mello got married on June 24, 2010, in São Paulo.
