Muscles

Testosterone is an anabolic steroid which helps build and maintain muscles with physical activity, such as exercise. The amount of testosterone produced varies from one individual to another, but on average, an adult female produces around one-tenth of the testosterone of an adult male, but females are more sensitive to the hormone. The muscles most likely to be affected are the pectoral muscles, biceps and triceps in the arms and quadriceps in the thighs.

On the other hand, estrogens reduce muscle mass. Muscle mass changes over time as a result of changes in testosterone and estrogen levels and exercise, besides other factors.

Famous quotes containing the word muscles:

    Light
Flashed from his matted head and marble feet,
    He grappled at the net
With the coiled, hurdling muscles of his thighs:
The corpse was bloodless, a botch of reds and whites,
    Robert Lowell (1917–1977)

    All of this,
    and the curious knee-cap,
    fitted above the wrought greaves,
and the sharp muscles of your back
which the tunic could not cover.
    Hilda Doolittle (1886–1961)

The indispensable ingredient of any game worth its salt is that the children themselves play it and, if not its sole authors, share in its creation. Watching TV’s ersatz battles is not the same thing at all. Children act out their emotions, they don’t talk them out and they don’t watch them out. Their imagination and their muscles need each other.
    Leontine Young (20th century)
