Felixstowe Branch Line - Proposed Developments

Proposed Developments

Work is under way in 2012 to increase the capacity of the Port of Felixstowe with additional deep water berths and a new rail terminal. In 2008 the Secretary of State for Transport approved the 'Felixstowe Branch Line and Ipswich Yard Improvement Order'. This empowered the construction of a new marshalling yard at Ipswich and the laying of a second track for 7,150 metres (4.44 mi) from Trimley westwards to Levington. Crossovers at Trimley will allow two trains to pass on this section, and it will considerably shorten the single track section eastwards from Derby Road. This will help accommodate the additional trains which will be generated by the port's expansion.

In 2011 Network Rail submitted plans for a new double track curve at Ipswich to avoid the necessity of any train running between Felixstowe and the Cambridge and Ely Line having to reverse in Upper Yard. This is one of a number of enhancements between Felixstowe and Nuneaton which are designed to allow trains to reach the West Coast Main Line without travelling over congested lines in the London area. During the 2012 Summer Olympics Freightliner diverted ten Felixstowe trains each day through either Cambridge or Ely to free up capacity at Stratford which was next to the main venue for the games.

Famous quotes containing the words proposed and/or developments:

The proposed Constitution ... is, in strictness, neither a national nor a federal constitution; but a composition of both.
    James Madison (1751–1836)

The developments in the North were those loosely embraced in the term modernization and included urbanization, industrialization, and mechanization. While those changes went forward apace, the antebellum South changed comparatively little, clinging to its rural, agricultural, labor-intensive economy and its traditional folk culture.
    C. Vann Woodward (b. 1908)
