Governance and Funding
The Fargo Public Schools is governed by a nine-member Board of Education, whose members may serve an unlimited number of four-year terms. Board members oversee the district’s annual operating budget, which was $124 million during the 2011-12 school year. As of 2011, the school district’s operating levy was sitting at about 221 mills. Fifty-two percent of the district’s general fund revenue comes from the state’s foundation aid. The balance comes from property tax (36%), federal funding (10%), and other sources (2% or less). Of its expenses, 71 percent goes to instructional programming. The remainder includes operation and maintenance (9%), instructional support (6%), capital (6%), and construction services (2%).
