Fao Landing - The Battle of Fao Fortress

The Battle of Fao Fortress

The British heavy artillery arrived on November 8 and the British immediately began bombarding the Ottoman fort. The artillery breached the walls and the British troops charged into the fortress. After 45 minutes of close quarters combat inside the fortress, the British managed to capture the fort and 300 Ottoman prisoners. The British marched unopposed into the Port of Fao the next day, and the rest of the division soon began landing.

Famous quotes containing the words battle and/or fortress:

Nelson’s famous signal before the Battle of Trafalgar was not: “England expects that every man will be a hero.” It said: “England expects that every man will do his duty.” In 1805 that was enough. It should still be.
    Johan Huizinga (1872–1945)

There is no man who desires as passionately as a Russian. If we could imprison a Russian desire beneath a fortress, that fortress would explode.
    Joseph De Maistre (1753–1821)
