Fan Qiang - in Fiction

In Fiction

In Luo Guanzhong's historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zhang Fei ordered Fan and Zhang Da to prepare mourning attire for the troops, as he was planning to join Liu Bei in attacking Sun Quan to avenge Guan Yu and take back Jing Province. Fan and Zhang Da failed to meet the deadline and were flogged by Zhang Fei in anger. They knew they were unable to complete the mission and were afraid of being punished, so they murdered Zhang Fei while he was asleep, and defected to Sun Quan.

Sun Quan sent them back to Liu Bei in an attempt to make peace later. Fan and Zhang Da were executed by Zhang Fei's son, Zhang Bao.

Famous quotes containing the word fiction:

The purpose of a work of fiction is to appeal to the lingering after-effects in the reader’s mind as differing from, say, the purpose of oratory or philosophy which respectively leave people in a fighting or thoughtful mood.
    F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940)

Given that external reality is a fiction, the writer’s role is almost superfluous. He does not need to invent the fiction because it is already there.
    —J.G. (James Graham)
