Family Liaison Officer

Family Liaison Officer

A Police Family Liaison Officer (FLO) is a role of an officer either of uniformed or plain-clothed Criminal Investigation Department (CID) role, although some companies and schools have FLO's the best known and most used are of the Police's. Every territorial police force has a pool of trained FLOs, FLOs who have passed their probationary period are then allowed to fulfill the role. The FLO is assigned to the family by the Senior Investigative Officer (SIO). FLOs are usually assigned any situation where a point of contact between the family and the police is deemed essential, such as a high profile murder investigation, or a case of a missing child. The Metropolitan Police Service has occasionally send FLOs to families who have lost relatives in terrorist attacks or major disasters.

FLOs need good communication skills as they are often the person who reports investigative advances in the case. Sometimes the FLOs will give a statement to the media if the family do not wish to.

Famous quotes containing the words family and/or officer:

It was occasions like this that made me more resolved than ever that my family would someday know real security. I never for a moment doubted that I myself would ultimately provide it for them.
    Mary Pickford (1893–1979)

When Prince William [later King William IV] was at Cork in 1787, an old officer ... dined with him, and happened to say he had been forty years in the service. The Prince with a sneer asked what he had learnt in those forty years. The old gentleman justly offended, said, “Sir, I have learnt, when I am no longer fit to fight, to make as good a retreat as I can” —and walked out of the room.
    Horace Walpole (1717–1797)
