Factor of Safety - Yield & Ultimate Calculations

Yield & Ultimate Calculations

For ductile materials (e.g. most metals), it is often required that the factor of safety be checked against both yield and ultimate strengths. The yield calculation will determine the safety factor until the part starts to plastically deform. The ultimate calculation will determine the safety factor until failure. On brittle materials these values are often so close as to be indistinguishable, so is it usually acceptable to only calculate the ultimate safety factor.

Famous quotes containing the words yield, ultimate and/or calculations:

You oughtn’t to yield to temptation.
Well, somebody must, or the thing becomes absurd.
    Anthony Hope (1863–1933)

The air was clear. He seemed in ultimate peace

Except that he had no eyes. Rigid and bright
    Upon the forehead, furred
With a light frost, crouched an outrageous bird.
    Anthony Hecht (b. 1923)

What, really, is wanted from a neighborhood? Convenience, certainly, an absence of major aggravation, to be sure. But perhaps most of all, ideally, what is wanted is a comfortable background, a breathing space of intermission between the intensities of private life and the calculations of public life.
    Joseph Epstein (b. 1937)
