External Occipital Protuberance

Near the middle of the occipital squama is the external occipital protuberance, and extending lateralward from it on either side is the superior nuchal line, and above this the faintly marked highest nuchal line.

It is less pronounced in females.

The inion is the highest point of the external occipital protuberance.

Famous quotes containing the words external and/or occipital:

    A tempest cracked on the theatre. Quickly,
    The wind beat in the roof and half the walls.
    The ruin stood still in an external world.
    It had been real. It was something overseas
    That I remembered, something that I remembered
    Overseas, that stood in an external world.
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

    in the absence of feet, “a method of conclusions”;
    “a knowledge of principles,”
    in the curious phenomenon of your occipital horn.
