Method of Secretion
Exocrine glands are named apocrine glands, holocrine glands, or merocrine glands based on how their products are excreted.
- Apocrine glands - a portion of the plasma membrane buds off the cell, containing the excretion.
- Holocrine glands - the entire cell disintegrates to excrete its substance, an example is sebaceous glands for skin and nose.
- Merocrine glands or (eccrine glands) - cells excrete their substances by exocytosis an example is pancreatic acinar cells.

Famous quotes containing the words method of and/or method:
“English! they are barbarians; they dont believe in the great God. I told him, Excuse me, Sir. We do believe in God, and in Jesus Christ too. Um, says he, and in the Pope? No. And why? This was a puzzling question in these circumstances.... I thought I would try a method of my own, and very gravely replied, Because we are too far off. A very new argument against the universal infallibility of the Pope.”
—James Boswell (17401795)
“... [a] girl one day flared out and told the principal the only mission opening before a girl in his school was to marry one of those candidates [for the ministry]. He said he didnt know but it was. And when at last that same girl announced her desire and intention to go to college it was received with about the same incredulity and dismay as if a brass button on one of those candidates coats had propounded a new method for squaring the circle or trisecting the arc.”
—Anna Julia Cooper (18591964)
