Exeter Crossing Loop Collision - Events Leading To Accident

Events Leading To Accident

The Up fast goods train was running late by the time it reached Exeter. Despite the train being too long to be accommodated in the loop at that station, the signaller turned the train into the loop. When the locomotive had reached the points at the Sydney end of the station, the rear of the train was still on the Main line at the southern end.

Faced with the knowledge that the Temora Mail would soon be due, the goods train was brought forward so that it could be reversed into a siding on the eastern side of the station yard. It was during this manouvre that the Temora Mail struck the goods train head-on.

Famous quotes containing the words events, leading and/or accident:

Nothing that grieves us can be called little: by the eternal laws of proportion a child’s loss of a doll and a king’s loss of a crown are events of the same size.
Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835–1910)

There are people who are so presumptuous that they know no other way to praise a greatness that they publicly admire than by representing it as a preliminary stage and bridge leading to themselves.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

A sudden light transfigures a trivial thing, a weather-vane, a wind-mill, a winnowing flail, the dust in the barn door; a moment,—and the thing has vanished, because it was pure effect; but it leaves a relish behind it, a longing that the accident may happen again.
    Walter Pater (1839–1894)
