Evan X Hyde - Early Life and Education

Early Life and Education

Hyde was born in Belize City to a large family led by his father, Charles B. Hyde, a public servant. He attended the Holy Redeemer Boys' School, prior to its amalgamation with a girls' school of the same name, and the all-male St. John's College High School in Belize City. Evan particularly excelled at creative writing. He was among the first students to attend the SJC Junior College in 1964 and 1965, before being granted a scholarship by the U.S. Embassy to study at Dartmouth in Hanover, New Hampshire. Evan enrolled in September 1966 and graduated in June 1968 among the top students in his class. He had settled on a writing career, but events which were to unfold over the next five years greatly altered that outlook.

Famous quotes containing the words early, life and/or education:

Two sleepy people by dawn’s early light, and two much in love to say goodnight.
    Frank Loesser (1910–1969)

Never in my life have I met anyone who did not agree that Emerson is an inspiring writer. One may not accept his thought in toto, but one comes away from a reading of him purified, so to say, and exalted. He takes you to the heights, he gives you wings. He is daring, very daring. In our day he would be muzzled, I am certain.
    Henry Miller (1891–1980)

An acquaintance with the muses, in the education of youth, contributes not a little to soften the manners. It gives a delicate turn to the imagination, and a kind of polish to the mind in severer studies.
    Samuel Richardson (1689–1761)
