European X-ray Free Electron Laser

The European x-ray free electron laser (European XFEL) is an X-ray research laser project currently under construction and is as of 2012 slated to be operational by the end of 2015. The international project with 12 participating countries is located in the German federal states of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. A free electron laser generates high-intensity electromagnetic radiation by accelerating electrons to relativistic speeds and directing them through special magnetic structures. The European XFEL is constructed such that the electrons produce x-ray light in synchronisation, resulting in high-intensity x-ray pulses with the properties of laser light and at intensities much brighter than those produced by conventional synchrotron light sources.

Famous quotes containing the words european and/or free:

In European thought in general, as contrasted with American, vigor, life and originality have a kind of easy, professional utterance. American—on the other hand, is expressed in an eager amateurish way. A European gives a sense of scope, of survey, of consideration. An American is strained, sensational. One is artistic gold; the other is bullion.
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

If I had not come to America, where I felt free to formulate tentatively insights at which I had empathically arrived, I would have accomplished very little. I would never have begun to publish, to teach, to undertake research. Because if one does not find an assenting echo to one’s ideas, if one is passed over, as I was in Vienna, then one cannot create. To create, after all, is to believe that what one says will count.
    Margaret S. Mahler (1897–1985)
