European Union Satellite Centre

The European Union Satellite Centre (EUSC) is an agency of the European Union's (EU) Council of Ministers which gathers information through satellite images.

EUSC was set up in 2002 to replace the Western Union Satellite Centre and thus represents a part of the transfer of functions from the Western European Union (WEU) to the European Union (EU), and more specifically to the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP). The centre is in Torrejón de Ardoz in Spain. Other countries who have an association agreement with the EUSC can also use its resources.

Although it is autonomous in its daily operations, the High Representative of the Common Security Policy, in the person of Catherine Ashton, is responsible for its operational direction.

Famous quotes containing the words european, union, satellite and/or centre:

To the cry of “follow Mormons and prairie dogs and find good land,” Civil War veterans flocked into Nebraska, joining a vast stampede of unemployed workers, tenant farmers, and European immigrants.

The best philosophical attitude to adopt towards the world is a union of the sarcasm of gaiety with the indulgence of contempt.
    —Sébastien-Roch Nicolas De Chamfort (1741–1794)

Books are the best things, well used; abused, among the worst. What is the right use? What is the one end, which all means go to effect? They are for nothing but to inspire. I had better never see a book, than to be warped by its attraction clean out of my own orbit, and made a satellite instead of a system.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

St. Augustine described the nature of God as a circle whose centre was everywhere, and its circumference nowhere.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
