European Parliament Constituencies
Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are elected by the population of the member states of the European Union (EU), divided into constituencies.
In six EU member states (Belgium, France, Ireland, Italy, Poland and the United Kingdom), the national territory is divided into a number of constituencies. In the remaining member states, the whole country forms a single constituency. In Germany, political parties are entitled to present lists of candidates either at Länder or national level.
Currently, all member states hold elections to the European Parliament (EP) using various forms of proportional representation.
The number of representatives per head of population varies widely across constituencies. For example, 75,000 German speaking Belgians have one representative, while Sardinia and Sicily have one seat for every 943,000 people.
Data are for the 2009-2014 legislature. Between brackets are the number of seats before the 2007 accession of Bulgaria and Romania.

Famous quotes containing the words european and/or parliament:
“We say that slavery has vanished from European civilization, but this is not true. Slavery still exists, but now it applies only to women and its name is prostitution.”
—Victor Hugo (18021885)
“The war shook down the Tsardom, an unspeakable abomination, and made an end of the new German Empire and the old Apostolic Austrian one. It ... gave votes and seats in Parliament to women.... But if society can be reformed only by the accidental results of horrible catastrophes ... what hope is there for mankind in them? The war was a horror and everybody is the worse for it.”
—George Bernard Shaw (18561950)
