European Mole - Reproduction

Reproduction

From June to January the mole is sexually inactive and has only one, relatively short breeding season that occurs in the spring. Mating occurs over a span of a few weeks in March and April, followed by a gestation period of 4-5 weeks. Most births will occur at the end of April or at the beginning of May. The litter size ranges from 2-7. There is a lactation period that follows, where the young remains at the mother’s nest for 4-5 weeks but normally at the end of June the young are required to leave the tunnels.

Famous quotes containing the word reproduction:

    An original is a creation
    motivated by desire.
    Any reproduction of an original
    is motivated by necessity ...
It is marvelous that we are
    the only species that creates
    gratuitous forms.
To create is divine, to reproduce
    is human.
    Man Ray (1890–1976)

Were I called on to define, very briefly, the term Art, I should call it “the reproduction of what the Senses perceive in Nature through the veil of the soul.” The mere imitation, however accurate, of what is in Nature, entitles no man to the sacred name of “Artist.”
    Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1845)

Although Samuel had a depraved imagination—perhaps even because of this—love, for him, was less a matter of the senses than of the intellect. It was, above all, admiration and appetite for beauty; he considered reproduction a flaw of love, and pregnancy a form of insanity. He wrote on one occasion: “Angels are hermaphrodite and sterile.”
    Charles Baudelaire (1821–1867)
